Sacramento authorities are looking into a gun violence incident that erupted on the evening of April 18 at the Howe Community Park area as law enforcement were dispersing an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.
Before the Gunfire
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first dispatched to the park on Howe Avenue around 6:30 PM after learning of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Following that, a second caller reported mentioning a reported physical confrontation occurring at Howe Park.
A sheriff's airship was sent to survey the area but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Despite this, deputies found that a massive group had assembled at the park in an unauthorized manner.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Deputies began the process of clearing the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers ordering the hundreds present to leave immediately. About 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.
Just as the crowd began to move that an estimated 20 to 25 shots echoed through the night. The barrage of gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
Altogether, four people were located with gunshot injuries. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were rushed to local Sacramento hospitals. Medical teams reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. As of last report, all four were expected to survive.
Metro Fire Sacramento also responded and aided in treating the four victims at the scene.
The Investigation
The main crime scene was believed to have unfolded adjacent to Cottage Way near the Home Depot at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. CSI personnel recovered more spent casings on Cottage Way. Bullet holes were noted in the iron fence surrounding the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence suggested that at least one shooter had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was put under lockdown as a precaution. CSI units alongside detectives continued working through the more info early morning hours.
Arrests Made
Details gathered over police scanner frequencies indicated that a suspect Kia was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four occupants were taken into custody. Sacramento law enforcement were dispatched to Solano County to pick up those detained for further questioning. Video reviewed at the scene showed that two individuals had fired weapons.
